How to cancel a gym membership

Updated November 8, 2026. One sentence, a written record, and no guilt.

Gym cancellations are designed to feel awkward: retention offers, “you have to come in,” questions about why. You do not owe a reason. You need your contract terms, one clear sentence, and a written confirmation that the charges stop.

1. Read the cancellation terms

Find your agreement (email, app, or member portal) and note the notice period, any cancellation fee, and the accepted cancellation methods. Write down your member or account number.

2. Use one sentence and repeat it

Example line: “Hi, I'd like to cancel my membership, account 12345, effective today.”

If they ask why, you can say “It's just not a fit for me right now” and repeat the request. If they offer a discount or freeze you do not want: “Thank you, but no. Please cancel the membership effective today.”

3. If they say it must be in person or by mail

Follow the method your contract actually requires. Send a short written request that includes your name, account number, the date, a request to stop all future charges, and a request for written confirmation of the effective date. Keep a copy and any tracking number.

The Bills Kit fills a written cancellation request with your details and includes Call Mode for the cancel call, with next lines for “why are you cancelling,” a discount offer, and “you have to come in.” It also covers internet, phone, card fees, and rent renewals. One-time $19, 14-day refund.

4. Get confirmation and watch your statement

Ask for a confirmation number or email that states the effective date and that no further charges will be made. Check your next statement. If a charge still posts, reply with your confirmation and ask for a refund.

Do I have to give a reason to cancel my gym membership?

Usually not. A short, repeated request such as “Please cancel my membership effective today” is enough. Your contract decides notice periods and any fees, so read it first.

What if the gym says I must cancel in person or by mail?

Read your contract for the required method. If it requires a letter, send a written cancellation request by a trackable method and keep a copy. Ask whether email or the app is also accepted.

What if they keep charging me after I cancel?

Send the gym your written confirmation or request and ask for a refund of charges after the effective date. If that fails, contact your card issuer about disputing charges after a documented cancellation.
