How does an employer 401(k) match work?

Many employers match a percentage of what you contribute, up to a cap of your salary. A common pattern is 50% or 100% of your contribution up to 3% to 6% of pay. The exact formula is in your plan summary. This calculator does simple arithmetic on the numbers you enter.

Should I always contribute enough to get the full match?

If you can afford it, yes: the match is extra compensation you otherwise leave on the table. After you capture the full match, how much more to contribute depends on your budget, debt, and other goals.

Is this tax or investment advice?

No. It estimates a yearly match dollar amount from the formula you enter. Tax treatment, vesting, and investment results vary. Check your plan documents or a qualified advisor for decisions that affect you.
