How to decline dealer add-ons

Updated November 8, 2026. Polite wording for the finance office.

You agreed on a price, then the finance office presents a menu of extras: service contracts, paint and fabric protection, etching, GAP. Some can make sense for some buyers, but each one adds to your total. Here is how to say no clearly and kindly.

1. Lock the out-the-door price in writing first

Before you visit, get an itemized out-the-door quote by email. That total is your reference point when new items appear on the contract.

2. Decide in advance what you want

If you think you might want GAP or a service contract, price it with your own insurer or credit union beforehand so you can compare calmly.

3. Use a short, repeatable no

Example line: “Thanks, I'll pass on the extras today. I'd like to sign at the out-the-door total we agreed on.” Repeat it as often as needed; you don't owe a long explanation.

4. Read every line before you sign

Compare the contract total with your written quote. If an item you declined appears, ask for it to be removed and a corrected contract printed.

The Car Kit includes email scripts for itemized out-the-door quotes, polite ways to decline add-ons, and Call Mode for the finance office. One-time $19, 14-day refund.

Do I have to buy dealer add-ons?

Many add-ons such as extended service contracts, paint protection, or GAP coverage are optional products. Pre-installed items can be harder to remove. Ask the dealer in writing which items are optional, and read every line of the contract before signing.

Is GAP insurance or an extended warranty ever worth it?

Sometimes, depending on your loan, down payment, and how long you keep the car. Compare with what your own insurer or credit union offers before deciding, and never feel rushed in the finance office.

What if they say the price only works with add-ons?

Ask for the out-the-door price in writing without them. If they won't separate them, you can politely walk away and compare written quotes from other dealers.

Is this legal or financial advice?

No. It is practical communication guidance. Read your contract and your state's rules, and follow your own judgment.
