Savings goal calculator
Updated November 7, 2026. Runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Enter your goal, what you already have saved, how many months you have, and an optional interest rate. You'll see how much to save each month, the deposits total, the growth along the way, and one calm sentence you can adapt. This is arithmetic only—not financial advice.
How to use the number
- If the monthly amount feels too high, stretch the months or lower the goal and watch the number move.
- Building a cushion first? See the free emergency fund calculator. Saving for a home? Try the down payment calculator. Curious about long-run growth? Use the future value calculator.
- The fastest way to free up the monthly amount is often a lower bill or a higher paycheck, and both start with one conversation.
What to say when you need room in the budget
Knowing the monthly number is step one. Asking a provider for a lower rate, or a manager for a raise, is where people freeze. The Bills Kit ($19) gives word-for-word lines for bill calls plus Call Mode. If pay is the lever, see the Raise Kit. One-time purchase, 14-day refund.
How is the monthly amount calculated?
With no interest, monthly savings ≈ (goal − already saved) ÷ months. With a monthly rate r, this sketch solves for the end-of-month deposit C so that saved × (1+r)^n + C × ((1+r)^n − 1) / r reaches the goal.
Is this financial advice?
No. It is simple arithmetic on the numbers you enter, plus a sample sentence you can adapt. It ignores taxes, fees, and changing rates, and it is not a substitute for a qualified professional.
What rate should I enter?
Use the annual yield you actually expect on the account holding the money, such as a savings account rate. Enter 0 for cash or for a conservative sketch. The page converts the annual rate to a monthly rate (annual ÷ 12).
What if I am already past the goal?
If what you have already saved (plus any growth) reaches the goal, the calculator shows $0 needed per month.
Guidance only, not legal, financial, or tax advice. The calculator does simple arithmetic on the numbers you enter.
