How to ask your manager for a raise meeting
Updated November 8, 2026. A short request email you can send today.
The hardest part of asking for a raise is often the first message. A short, calm request sets the topic, gives your manager time to prepare, and gets the conversation on the calendar.

1. Pick the timing
Aim for a calm week, ideally before budgets are finalized or soon after a clear result you delivered.
2. Keep the request short
Example message: “Hi [Name], could we find 30 minutes in the next couple of weeks to talk about my role and compensation? I'd like to share what I've delivered this year and where I'd like to grow.”
3. Prepare a one-page case
List three to five concrete wins with numbers where you can, the responsibilities you've taken on, and the specific raise you're asking for.
4. Recap the same day
After the meeting, send a brief recap of what was discussed and any next step or date, so nothing gets lost.
The Raise Kit includes a meeting request script, a one-page case builder, a same-day recap, a plan for ‘not right now,’ and Call Mode for the meeting itself. One-time $29, 14-day refund.

Should I ask for a raise by email or in person?
Use a short email or message to request the meeting, then have the actual conversation live. The email sets the topic so your manager isn't caught off guard and can check budget beforehand.
Should I say it's about a raise in the request?
Yes, briefly. Something like 'I'd like to talk about my role and compensation' is clear and professional without putting your whole case in writing.
When is the best time to ask?
Often a few weeks before budgets are set or right after a clear win. Avoid busy deadlines or the middle of a crisis for your team.
