Tip calculator
Updated November 7, 2026. Runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Enter the bill, tip percent, and how many people are splitting. You'll see the tip, the total, the per-person share, and one calm sentence you can adapt when money talk comes up. This is arithmetic only—not financial advice.
How to use the number
- Match the bill amount to how you tip (pre-tax subtotal vs total with tax).
- For broader monthly pressure, see the free bill savings calculator or savings rate calculator.
- If a recurring bill is the real squeeze, one calm phone call often frees more than trimming a tip.
What to say when a recurring bill is the real problem
Knowing the tip math is easy. Asking a provider to lower a monthly bill is where people freeze. The Bills Kit ($19) gives word-for-word lines for those calls plus Call Mode. One-time purchase, 14-day refund.
How is the tip calculated?
Tip = bill × tip percent. Total = bill + tip. Per person ≈ total ÷ people when you split evenly. This page does that arithmetic only.
What tip percent should I use?
Common U.S. restaurant tips often fall around 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill, but local customs, service quality, and whether tax or fees are included vary. Enter the percent that matches your situation.
Should I tip on tax?
Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; some tip on the total. Enter whichever bill amount you intend to tip on.
Is this financial advice?
No. It is simple arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It is not tax advice and not a substitute for checking your receipt.
Guidance only, not legal, financial, or tax advice. The calculator does simple arithmetic on the numbers you enter.
