How to cancel a subscription or membership
Updated November 8, 2026. A clean, documented way to stop recurring charges.
Unused subscriptions and memberships are some of the easiest money to recover, but cancel flows can be confusing on purpose. The fix is boring and effective: know the contract terms, cancel in writing when you can, decline offers you do not want, and keep proof.

1. Find every recurring charge
Scan 60 to 90 days of bank and card statements, plus your phone's app store subscriptions. Multiply each monthly charge by 12 to see the yearly cost. The free bill savings calculator shows what cutting them is worth.
2. Check how the contract says to cancel
Look for the cancellation method (online, email, mail, or in person), any notice period, and the billing date. Cancel a few days before the next billing date so the timing is not close.
3. Try the online option first
Most streaming, software, and app subscriptions cancel in account settings. Take a screenshot of the confirmation page and save any confirmation email.
4. If you must call or write, keep it short
- State that you are canceling, not asking about options.
- Give your account number and the date you want it to end.
- Politely decline retention offers you do not want: “Thanks, but I'd like to cancel today.”
- Ask for a confirmation number and the final billing date, and write down the rep's name.
Prefer to pause or pay less instead? Ask for a pause, a cheaper tier, or a loyalty rate before you cancel. Sometimes that beats starting over later.
The Bills Kit includes a written cancellation request and a cancellation call script with replies for common save attempts, plus Call Mode to keep your next line on screen. It also covers internet, phone, card fees, and rent renewals. One-time $19, 14-day refund.
5. Watch the next statement
Check that the charge stops. If you are billed after a confirmed cancellation, contact the merchant with your confirmation, then your card issuer if it is not fixed.

What is the fastest way to cancel a subscription?
Check the account settings on the website or app first, since many services let you cancel online in a few clicks. For app store subscriptions, cancel in your phone's subscription settings. If there is no online option, use the written request or call steps below.
What if a gym or membership makes canceling hard?
Read the contract for the cancellation method and notice period, then follow it exactly. Send a dated written request (email or certified letter if the contract requires it), keep a copy, and ask for written confirmation of the end date.
Should I just block the card?
Blocking a card does not cancel a contract, and you may still owe the balance. Cancel properly first. If you are charged after a confirmed cancellation, contact the merchant with your proof, then your card issuer if needed.
