How to use the number

Freeing up more to save

A better rate helps, but lowering a monthly bill usually frees more money to save. That call is where people freeze. The Bills Kit ($19) gives word-for-word lines for asking providers to lower a bill, plus Call Mode. One-time purchase, 14-day refund.

What is APY?

Annual percentage yield (APY) is the yearly return on a deposit including the effect of compounding. APY = (1 + APR ÷ n)^n − 1, where n is how many times per year interest compounds.

What is the difference between APR and APY?

APR is the simple yearly rate before compounding. APY includes compounding, so for the same rate APY is equal to or higher than APR. Savings accounts usually advertise APY.

How is the interest earned estimated?

Ending balance ≈ deposit × (1 + APY)^years, assuming the rate stays the same and you add or withdraw nothing. Real accounts can change rates at any time.

Is this financial advice?

No. It is simple arithmetic on the numbers you enter. Check your bank's disclosures for the actual rate and terms.

Guidance only, not legal, financial, or tax advice. The calculator does simple arithmetic on the numbers you enter.
