Your counteroffer$95,500

Why counter at all

In Resume Genius's 2025 survey of U.S. workers, 55% said they accepted their first offer without negotiating, and most of those who did negotiate reported getting a better offer. A single, polite counter with a specific number is usually low risk and can compound for years, since raises are often a percentage of base.

How to use the number

What to say when they push back

The hard part isn't the number, it's the next 60 seconds: "That's above our range," "Let me check with the team," or silence. The Offer Kit gives you word-for-word replies for each of those moments, plus Call Mode, a full-screen companion that shows your next line during the call. It's a one-time $29, with a 14-day refund policy.

How much should I counter a job offer?

A common, defensible range is 10% to 20% above the base offer, backed by market data for your role and city. In a 2026 hiring-manager survey by Resume Genius, hiring managers reported being comfortable with counters of roughly 10% to 25% above the offer. Pick the low end if the offer is already at or above market, and the high end if it is clearly below.

Can a company take back an offer if I negotiate?

It is uncommon when you counter politely with a specific number and a reason, but it is possible, especially in at-will employment. Keep the tone appreciative, ask once, and say you are excited about the role.

Should I give a round number?

Use a precise or slightly uneven number tied to your research (for example $93,500 rather than $90,000). It signals that you did the math rather than guessed.

Is this financial or legal advice?

No. It is a communication aid that does simple arithmetic. Check pay data for your role, level, and location before you decide.
